cane arrow alternative points - what are my options?
« on: May 24, 2020, 03:46:56 pm »
In the absence of duplex nails, what can I use to make target points for cane/bamboo arrows - I have straightened the shafts and filled in the open ends with 1.5 inch   dowels cut off flush with the end of the shafts?  I have bone, antler and water buffalo horn but I am not a fan of metalworking, although I'm OK with gluing in nails/screws/nuts and bolts.

You can drill the dowel and screw in points that are threaded or glue them in.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

+1 but make sure you wrap it. Boo can take incredible compression loads but it will split in an instant.

Wrapping is the most important part even more important than filling the void. Wrap the point and nock end.

I did think to wrap the tip by filing a shallow groove and wrap with cotton thread soaked in cyano.

Would inserting a posidrive/philips dome head screw work as a target blunt?

I knew a guy that would cut a long, angled cut about 1" or so beyond a node on the point end, heat treat it, fill the hole with sand and seal it with melted pitch for his target points on his primitive arrows. I've seen him shoot it in an oak tree without damaging the point.
