Gray fox possibles bag.
« on: April 12, 2021, 06:23:40 pm »
Something I put together months ago.Jazzed it up a bit even though I use it while hunting holding my calls.Made from brain tanned
smoked deer and aluminum sulfate tanned gray fox hide.Beadwork is sky blue, brown, and red 11 seed beads.Beaded is such a fashion diamond like to represent arrowheads.Arrowheads and rosette lazy sioux stiched with nymo thread.Lanyard is 4 way braid of thick brain tan lace from neck of a buck.
Forgot to mention the deer hide was one I shot with a self bow,and the gray fox was shot with a shotgun on the yard.

Sure Ed, I usally put them in a mesh crawfish bag so spores can fall thru back to earth for another years mushrooms.

I always liked gray fox, like the way there front claws curve downward. Once ya learn a little about them they are not hard to catch. They are really not like a red at all. I dont see many of eaither with all these yotes around any more.

This coming fall I am not giving any passes to Bobcats. Just to many here and I was told they can eat thru a clutch of hatched turkey chicks or polts in a hurry. Time to take a few outta there here woods.

Mostly reds here.Their mostly out on the flat. The grays are a curious little creature.Had them come right up to me in the woods at night while leaning against a tree waiting for the hounds to strike.Their a little smaller than the reds here. They've been known to climb trees occasionally.I imagine a hollowed out leaner.Their hair coloration is a lot like our ground hogs here only finer hair and softer.
Spotted this litter of reds last spring.

I tanned a pair of Iowa bobcats some time ago.Tom was over 3' long with the female around 30".Made a cat quiver out of the female with all the appendages attatched.
All these creatures are just about the right thickness leather wise to make bags, quivers,or hats from.

I still have a couple of coyote hides yet to make a pouch from. One my old hammer dog caught in 10 below zero weather one winter.I'll dress that one up sometime in the future. She weighed 35 to 40 pounds. The other I use to put on my chair/backpack rig.He weighed 45 to 50 pounds.
Does it really make a difference to you tradecraftsman? They are related you know, but it might depending on what type of project you want to do.Although each is big enough to be a quiver or a hat or a pouch. In this case with the backpack/chair that hide is big enough to cover the chair. It is a big coyote for around here.
