First Working Bow: Hop Hornbeam Flatbow
« on: July 14, 2021, 05:56:00 pm »
Just finished up my first working bow (2nd attempt as the first one broke). A big thank you to everyone who answered my new bowyer questions on here!

Hop hornbeam
68" ntn
65# @ 30.5"
2" at the fades
1-1.5" of set after resting overnight
Walleye skin decorative backing
Red thread wrap
Dyed cow leather handle wrap
Tru oil finish

I don't have a chronograph to shoot it through but it seems pretty quick for a first bow and is quiet! Couldn't get the string alignment tracking super well but it hasn't caused any issues yet after ~75 shots. Any drawknife work was done with a draw knife I made last Fall from some old farm equipment sitting around. It has been a journey for a first bow and I think I might be hooked!

Also, had the approval of our tracking dog Rukah, a corgi!

Very impressive!  Including the homemade draw knife.  Wow!  I think the corgi even approves.

Congratulations! I think the hardest part is getting to the first bow that shoots. It'll only get easier from here :)

Excellent :) Well done. My advise for the next one would be find as close to perfect a stave as you can.

Looks good.  Try and get the limbs working a bit more in the inner third of the limbs on your next one
