Thuja longbow with branches on back 36#/26” (No. 130)
« on: September 26, 2021, 12:32:25 pm »
The local bio junk container from the local community is a never ending resource for staves. Always find the most curious things there. Someone has cut down his thuja hedge. I found a trunk with a lot of branches just on one half side (obvious exposed to the sunlight), the other side was clear (obvious the dark hedge side). Of course I was interested in the spiky side.
The wood was already dry, it is soft, flexible – a bit like juniper. But these little branches are unbelievable hard, just the opposite to the trunk.
The branches are cut away, but I left on the stumps. It looks just too cool. The pics shows it only in portions, in reality it looks like a pocupine.
As the wood is that soft, the tips got a coat from dyed raw hide for nocks.
No handle wrap, as here are also some stumps (position in between the fingers). Arrow pass is at a burnt in mark.
She took more set than I like, thuja isn’t a real bow wood.
Cross section is half circle, back is curved natural and belly is flat, in other words more or less the half of the sapling. No steam, no heat treatment, no heat correction.

Simply amazing. I gravitate towards using small diameter saplings / trees for my bows the last couple years. I am always super picky in finding the clearest branch free trees I can find. You just inspired me to give one that has branched a shot. Not to that extent though, don’t think I could pull that off lol.

That tiller looks great,  Very interesting bow.
You have a local bio-junk container open to public picking?

So do you think the tiller is not o. k.? Tell me what you think.

Maybe I have named that thing wrong, I mean the container where everybody can through in the cuts from gardening. And yes of course you can pick things out - the community is happy when they don't neeed to recicle.

Thanks everybody for leaving a comment!

I believe he meant for that ? To be a !. I do the same all the time. It is awesome you have those bio containers at your disposal. They may exist in more urban areas here, but your posts are the first I’ve heard of them. A town close to me has a free brush dump where people can dump trees and limbs but every time I’ve been there the selection quality has been poor.
