Scored some black locust
« on: January 20, 2022, 04:26:29 pm »
Been wanting to build a black locust bow but having trouble finding suitable wood. Well my uncle cut some down and I scored some billet material. This is some of the nicest stuff I've seen around here...the grain was so straight it only took one wedge to split each piece. The rings are nice and thick to. So got the ends painted. The cracks are worse than they are plus the billets are over 3 ft long so room to trim if needed. Probably wait a few weeks to get some of the initial moisture out and then start controlled drying so I can get started on one

Black locust is one of my favorite woods for shorter sinew backed bows.  You just have to be sure it's wide enough and tiller it slowly to prevent fretting.  I have hunted with one bow for the past couple of years and been very lucky with several deer.

Seems like common sense isn't very common any more...

Some very nice billets there!  Should make some beautiful, hard hitting bows.

Bob. I've been saving sinew literally for years wanting to make a sinew backed recurve. I may be reaching out to you if you don't mind
