Yew Take-Down Longbow 54#@26"
« on: July 04, 2022, 11:19:02 pm »
A friend of mine passed along some exceptional Pacific yew billets that had come from the stash of the late, great Gerald Welch. A customer of mine who was a good friend of Mr. Welch's caught wind of them and asked for me to make him a take-down longbow with them. The bow is 68" long and pulls 54#@26". It is backed with kangaroo rawhide. The nocks are made from buffalo horn. The handle wrap is tanned beaver tail.

Not seeing the images. I posted them the same way I always did using Imgur. Did something change on the site here?

EDIT (there we go. just needed to change the size on them.)

Yep, that is a beauty. Great attention to detail.

Did you intentionally shape a little deflex into the sleeve fit, or did the natural shape of the billets dictate it?
I have an old Scotish, or English bow from the 19thC, with joined billets where they were intentionally aligned with a little deflex. Like yours, the limbs appear to have taken zero set along the limbs.

Thank you for the kind words, everyone!

Thank you. I brace it about 6.25"

The billets had some natural deflex there. You can't really play with the profile at the handle like you can with a splice when you're using takedown sleeves. Once I had the bow bending some I heated most of the deflex out but as you can see there is still some left. It certainly didn't take away from the efficiency of the bow. It shoots quite well.

Couldn't see pictures first time I looked. It was worth the wait. Outstanding!
