Hair on hides?
« on: August 30, 2022, 11:51:26 am »
Hi, everybody.  I am hoping to kill and elk and possibly a couple of whitetails this year, and would like to use the hides if practical.  I know mule deer and antelope are worthless as hair-on hides because the hair is brittle.  What about elk and whitetails?  Are their hides any good hair-on, or do they have to be made into leather to be useful?  I'd be interested in your experience.

If your into camping and sleeping on the cool or cold ground hair on hides from deer, elk, moose and caribou work very well to keep a person warm throughout the night.
If using army cots to sleep on placing them on the cot before your bedding will keep the cold away from your back side also.
I went to using willow rod mats and buffalo hides myself.
Good luck with your hunt.
