First point
« on: December 16, 2023, 04:51:26 pm »
My wife had ordered me 5 lbs of mahogany obsidian for an early Christmas present that arrived yesterday. I got working on it this morning and got this out of first piece.. far from perfect but I’ll take it.

Had a flake pretty good but broke it trying to notch it. Turned it into this.

That’s how it’s done. Notching is another whole ballgame. You are improving.

Thanks Ben & BJ. Just to be clear those are two different points. The bottom one was from a flake that was from the top piece. I figured I’d use it to practice pressure flaking. It had a step fracture in it that caused a chunk to fly off so I just tried to make it the same on both sides. Still need to get much better at thinning

Got another one. Still need to work on thinning.
No no notches yet. Decided to quit and let it rest a while.

Wouldn’t say good falcon but, thanks anyway.. it is however a start.  On second thought it is good for me. Still a long ways to go. I’m learning, slowly.

Had a pretty good bi-face going, probably 2 1/2 wide x 3 1/2 long and getting pretty thin. Made the mistake of trying to thin the middle before the ends and ended up snapping it into. So I took the larger piece and turned it into this. Also tried my first corner notch. Not good but, at least with this obsidian I’m not just making gravel.

Well, when someone asks you "what's your point", you can laugh and pull one of these out!

Thanks gentlemen. I’m hoping to get better at thinning, also symmetry. I’m finding the obsidian easier to work than the Georgetown. Not sure why that is but seems to be the case for me.
