Elm bow
« on: March 22, 2024, 02:55:29 pm »
Here´s an Elm bow I just finished.

From an oval shaped (for low crown) 4" diameter sapling. Ulmus Glabra / Wych elm.

68" long
50# @ 28" draw
2" wide at fades. Lever 0,6" (1,5cm) at thickest
510g / 18 oz

Finish is black shoe polish for dye, tung oil and red shellack to give some warmth to the white wood. Then 4 coats of marine spar varnish to keep the moisture out.

Loosely based on the stone age Mollegabet & inspired by Tim Bakers Eiffel-tipped Mantra bow.

It dried into apr. 2" reflex but most of it was lost. It still has 1/3" of reflex after 50+ arrows. Lower limb has a slight bend mid limb. I tried to straighten it but that was eventually pulled out at full draw, but at least it kept it´s straighter shape during most of the tillering so it was helpful.

Very nice and smooth to shoot without much hand shock. Will upload FD later.

Thanks for looking.

That’s a real beauty there!  Nice stain job. I’d like to try elm one of these days. Great job on that one.
