Noisy arrow

I just finished a cane arrow with turkey feathers and it is a little noisy. It's also equipped with a trade point. I'm not sure what's causing it to sorta hiss while it flies. Has anyone had this problem and how can I solve it? The feathers are about 3/4 of an inch tall and 5'' long. Thanks

how are the fletchings cut?

are they shield cut or taper cut?
i have some that are taper cut that hiss when in flight.
shield cut are supposed to be quiter.

IMO, turkey feathers are noisy no matter what.  However, the shorter the feather is near the nock, the quieter it gets.....basically, the shield cut as sailordad mentioned.  You can also decrease the distance between nock and back of the feather...it seems to make the arrow quieter as well.

In general, very stiff, tall, and "pointy back" feathers are very noisy...at least that's my experience.

  I don't think it matters, IMO. I've stood down range, catching them , and you don't hear the sound until it's too late.

  I have to be watching it leave the bow at least 40 yards out of a 35# bow to be able to attempt to hang onto one.

 I had one ,stupid doe, that I missed 4 times at 30 yards. It kept coming back and I finally shot it the fifth time.

I have noticed secondary and tail feathers are a bit noisier than primary feathers. Also, if your fletching has a pointed trailing edge it will hiss.    Like Eddie, I don't think it matters. The sound of feathers fluttering in the breeze is quite common in the deer woods.  ;)    Pat

Thanks everyone. The feathers look sorta like a pope and young. I trimmed them by hand and tha was just the shape they came out. As long as they won't cause a problem I just won't worry about the noise.

Like Pat said, if you have that point on the back, they hiss. 3/4" is pretty tall, too. I like hissing arrows myself, though-just like the sound of them.

I just read everyones opinions and it seem a general agrreemet that long featers towards the nock make noise.This raises the question would a banana cut be quieter since the feathers near the nocks would be shorter?R.C.

Cracker, yep-I just don't like the looks of 'nanner cut feathers myself, and they aren't great at steering broadheads.The shield cut is a good compromise. The swallowtail point on the back is what usually causes a lot of the noise.

yup but they sound so coooool 8) 8)

i love the sound,nothing better than hearing that "phffffffffffttttt" sound when an arrow is in flight.

  Banana cut seems real loud to me. I think maybe because they stick up high in the center.
