new heads
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:02:12 pm »
I didn't make these, but I thought I'd share them anyway. The top 6 are red obsidian, the bottom 5 are black, and the 2 off to the bottom right are chert. All knapped by a friend of my Father's. He's a retired fellow who spends the winters in Arizona. Most are 2-2.5" long, and 1" wide, with weights from 70-135 grains. Should make some awesome arrows. I hope to fling some of these at deer this fall.

He is a friend of my Father's, but they weren't free! He charges $10/inch.
Question for everyone... what sort of a backstop can you shoot these into, without damaging them?

I have a couple of old foam couch cushions that I use.

$10 an inch is pricey. $10-$15 each is more appropriate for me.
Old couch cushions will work also use the side of a bale of straw.  Justin

I didn't mind paying his price, obviously. The quality is the best I've seen so far. I believe, firmly, you get what you pay for. Check out 3Rivers, they're more expensive there.

Nice points, and $10 an inch is about the going price. A paper garbage bag loosely filled with soft rags works alright. The rags tend to hang onto the point and make the bag roll instead of passthroughs.

I recycle dog food bags(plastic weave kind-Purina) and stuff them full of those annoying plastic bags that every place of business uses now a days. This is a great stopper for all of my arrows with or without knapped heads. I haven't noticed my heads getting dulled and have yet to break any that enter the target.

those are some nice points. Old foam sofa cushion, some of the arras will bounce right back out - doesn't hurt the stone tip whatsoever.
