August Laminate Bows has a Tie
« on: September 08, 2008, 01:37:42 pm »
Congratulations to Marc St. Louis of Corbeil, Ontario.
His Two Entries for August Laminate Bows Resulted in a Tie

White Ash Backed Yew Longbow

Marc's Description:This is a White Ash backed Yew longbow I just made for a guy in England.  The bow is 6' long, 1 1/2" wide at the center and pulls 55# @ 28".  It has WB horn nocks with the top nock having a double string groove cut in.  The finish is alternating coats of Tung oil, Shellac with a final sealant of Carnauba paste wax . The bow was made out of a belly split from a stave.  The Tung oil really brings the color out in the wood as you can see in this picture
Lots of Praise, Here:
-"Absolutely lovely.  Yew heartwood backed with ash or hickory looks like a really good way to make a traditional compass bow style when yew staves are hard to find.  I make ELBs but have still not got my hands on any yew (common as rocking horse manure here in the UK).  Well done with this one." -backgardenbowyer
-"That's another nice one Marc! Tiller's perfect! Looks like a bow I could shoot comfortably." -Cowboy

Marc:The bow is a Bamboo backed Rosewood 60" long with limbs 1 1/8" wide that pulls about 55# @ 28".  Joe sent me some fossilized Walrus tusks for me to use as tip overlays, they were a pain to make but after losing finger nails and skin I got around to shaping them.  They are a bit bulkier than I care for and the shape of them made it hard to fit but all in all they look pretty darn neat.  Unfortunately I have heard that Brazillian Rosewood has been put on the endangered list and it is now impossible to buy it.  I was lucky enough to buy a board of it just before this happened.  It may still be possible to find some old stock though.
Comments:
"Marc, you are the master... what a fine bow... i will hunt with her this year with honor and respect as always...  Wolf Watcher is the finest friend I have known and I would like to thank him for having this bow built for me... hopefully he and i will make some meat together soon... thanks again Marc for your bowyer skills, can't wait to shoot her".. HAWK
"Heya Marc! I must say, this is very cool bow! The profile is very graceful and the full draw is perfect! " -Far East Archer

Thanks guys.  You might as well thank Steve and Mike since without them I wouldn't have built the bows  :)
