A Hupa style bow
« on: September 26, 2008, 03:21:05 pm »
This is a Hupa (West Coast Indians) type bow that I made.  It is sinew-backed hickory.  52" long ntn, 2 3/8" wide at the widest, 1" wide at the nocks.  It pulls 47 pounds at 25".  Tiller is not perfect, but it varies some from time to time, probably because of the sinew.  It was pretty even last week.  I had fun painting it, though, and it shoots pretty fast.

yeah, the paint looks great. im actuallt thinking of making a flatbow, do you thing sinew is nessassary or just a cool primitave edge for a good, straight grained hickory board? i have yet to have one of my hickory bows even splinter, but a good tiller is omething i dont tend to rush.

Yes, you would not necessarily need to sinew it, but it sure makes it stronger and reassures that you won't have string follow.
