1st selfbow deer
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:26:42 am »
Had a great day yesterday.  Two days earlier, I almost took a shot at this same deer, but the angle was questionable, so I passed.  Fortunately, he didn't bust me, so I knew his habits and he didn't know mine.  Yesterday at first light, he came along again and gave me a nice broadside opportunity just over 20 yds.  I was 10 ft up in a cedar with nice cover.  I managed to send my cedar arrow right behind the shoulder bone in into his heart.  Watched him go down 50 yards away.

I used this Osage take-down selfbow I made and posted last fall:

I finally got first blood with my own tackle.  What an experience!  I may have to get this one mounted.  It's a pretty small 8 pointer by most people's standards, but it's a real trophy to me.

Very cool! congratulations!  I'm still waiting for my first. ::)
A skull mount(European) makes a beautiful trophy and you can do it all your self for very little money. Since you made the other stuff, might as well do the mount too.  ;)   This is one I did a few years back(gun).     Pat

Nice Deer Tom.....Congrats..if you decide on the European Mount....I have a nice looking Simple to make Mounting Board Diagram you can use....really makes them look nice...like Pat said....you took Him with Handmade Equipment....might as well use your own two hands to Mount this Bad Boy!!! It is really easy....just send the Wife away shopping for 5-6 hours!!!!   >:D

Congratulations. Most people nowadays seem to spend too much time watching the buckmasters shows and get so anal that they take all the enjoyment out of hunting. That's a fine looking deer.

Thanks, y'all.  Pat & El D. - that European mount idea is enticing.  Maybe that way I could try my hand at brain-tanning the hide and still have a mount.

Here's another pic from that deer.  If it's too graphic, somebody let me know.

Great job! It is always nice to be rewarded for passing on a questionable shot by being offered a better one... ;)
