snow shoes
« on: January 24, 2009, 01:40:51 pm »
well its been severl years since weve had a real winter here in mn.
havent really had a need for them before and dont want to pay for something i know can be made by hand.
so if anyone knows how to or where i can find a good build along for snow shoes i would appreicate the info.

with the snow weve had this winter,if you want to go out in the woods especially on state land, you better have snow shoes or yould be
up to your bum in snow. try walking in that all day and hunting bunnies.that will wear out the best of us quik. and i damn sure aint in good enough
shape these days to attempt it, so i need to make me some shoes.

thanks ;D

Are you wanting to make wood and rawhide shoes or plastic?

I believe George has made his own snow shoes. Seems like he posted a pic a while ago.

I have tried to make my own wooden snowshoe. I've got my tutorial through this link- survivaltopics.com/survival/how-to-make-snowshoe. The tutorial gives me tips on the step by step process how to work on this.

I bought a book years ago, and it's one of the best I've seen - goes into great detail on lacing.  Author sells it on his site, or maybe you can find it at the library, http://gilgilpatrick.com/snowshoe-furniture.html

I think there is a class in the waiting here. When I lived in N-WI they have a weekend class in Jan. for building snow shoes, I think it cost around $200 or more for 1.5 days which included an overnight stay and materials. I wish I had attended. I will check the links the aluminum frame and plasic ones I have don't cut it with my weight.
