HIS AND HERS BOO BACKED IPE
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:21:17 pm »
my wife asked me to make her a pink bow that no guy would want to shoot :) We settled on a pink fade in the bamboo like a sunset so hers is named "sunset'. Its boo backed ipe with an ipe power lam and a stripe of maple in the handle. Elk antler ovelays. Hers is les than 3/4" at the widest and pulls an even 40#@26"  64" ntn. by far the thinnest bow ive made.  The next bow is mine its a r/d tri lam boo back, maple core, and ipe belly. also with elk overlays. It is real sweet and fast. I was actualy trying for a bit more poundage but the early weight fooled me and it gains very gradual in the draw. it pulls a hair over 50# @ 27" 66" ntn 1 1/8 at fades tapering to a little under 3/8" tips. Thanks for looking :)

Very nice work Jesse. I like how you rounded the edges on the risers. Looks better than the one you had at the classic last year that was all square.  I especially like the grip on your wife's bow.  The tips look nice too. Nice pictures also..... 8)

Nice bows.  You could have used Bubinga, it's a shade of pink

Thanks guys
Ryan I never forgot your advice to round my corners more and have been getting better at it ;) Marc good idea. I made these from the same board.
I got the ipe from Rich Saffold and the boo for mine came from KnightD.

Beautiful looking bows, Jesse. The contrast between the wood is striking. The deep cut in shelves are so smooth and rounded they look like they are molded. Sweet!

Thanks again :) Yeah Plenty of winter left. Were going to get 10" this week.
Catahoula good luck on your bow. Design of the two I think the straight profile is the way to go. I used spar urethane on my wifes and it took literally 3 weeks to dry so I wont use that on ipe again no matter how much I degrease. On mine I used a quick spray of wax free shellac after degreasing and topcoated with a few coats of water based spar which dries in one hour and you can re coat in two. I cant say how it will hold up because its the first time I tried this but so far so good. Hope that helps

;D  Those are beauties Jesse.  Your bow has to be very fast, with the low string angle, and how the limbs don't go to "straight" at full draw obviously gives your bow a very fat f/d curve. This is good naturally, and you were smart not to try for more poundage with the limb outline, unbraced profile and
composition being a tri-lam which didn't leave much belly wood.

Too often in this situation the bowyer has the strong desire to get the heavier bow from a given amount of wood, and this is the perfect example of getting the faster bow with less poundage 50# than it would have had at 60# since it would have been under built for the poundage and taken more set.

I have a few bows going from that same board so I am thrilled to see how it looks with that nice finish you put on it.. I got more wood and will pm you soon about it.
