hey, i'm thinking about making a setback-handle bow, by steaming or dry heat, with yew...anybody wanna show off theirs so i can copy????

Here are some pics from someplace on the net of two different continental style (late Medieval I believe) Yew bows; this style bow is called the Bourgogne Bow.

Ps:The Antler tips are from the bow in the first picture.

The handle is set back, or recurved from the back of the bow.
IMO a bow like the pictured Bourgogne Bow would be called 'double-curved' for the setback handle plus the recurved tips.

Very nice bows Frank.  I've always refered to these types as "gull wing"  Hear is one of mine. I've done a couple of these and not sure that I care for the design. Though I like the looks, I've found that the handle being set back tends to give more wrist slap unless braced higher.

(These bows pictured are museum pieces just to make sure).

Isn't 'gull-winged' a set-back handle with a deflex limb as found in the Apache bows??

Here's one that has the handle setback a bit.  I built it a couple months ago with an assist from Mother Nature.  Both the handle and bottom limb were already shaped this way.  I heat bent the top limb to match the bottom.  

63" nock to nock.  48# @ 28."   I've always called this my gull wing bow.....

but i do believe the pics eld posted are more acurate to a gull wing bow,and yours would be a set back handle

i love the setback/recurve, whatever you call it.  I built a couple laminated bows like that last year, four i think, of osage, hickory, and rosewood.  All good bows.

I have a yew branch about 70" long with a naturally setback handle...we'll see how the tips wind up!

El D, I would call the Cupid bow double-curved, the Lakota bow I would call gull-winged! (Both have set-back handles, of course!)
