Algonkian D bow

This Hickory D bow was inspired by a bow depicted in Hamm and Alleley's Encyclopedia of Bows Arrows and Quivers of the Native Americans Vol. 1.  the bow started as a hickory stave begging to become a bow.  So I started.  The bow roughed out quickly and came to final tiller with very few trips to the tree.  It's nice when you get a few like that. 

Following final tiller I burned the designs into the belly just like the original had with a wood burner.   Then I painted the "sine" wave and dots using acrylic red paint.  7 coats of tru oil (steel wooled in between) and the bow was done. 

Final metrics: 
handle: 1 1/4" w 3/8" t
mid limb: 1 1/8" W 3/8" t
NTN: 54"
End to end: 58"
set: 1 1/4"   Not bad in my book
Pull: 42 pounds @ 26"

Super job!  I found that book at our local library and love it...I may have to add it to my Library as I found it just as useful (maybe more so) as Hunting the Osage.  Maybe it is because I admire all the history behind of the Native American's.

      Good lookin bow sir......damned if them short NA's aint a whole bunch of fun to shoot... Hey ya got 26" out of it with an 1-1/4 set that's excellent....most of the museum examples have way more than that especially for the shorter self bows....very well done.

Ain't it great how little wood it takes to make such bows !? I've taken a liking to cutting small
saplings for bows like that.
