Cross Plains, TX Primitive Get-Together
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:21:46 am »
Primitive Get-Together, June 10-12, 6 miles west of Cross Plains, TX on highway 36.

  • Held at the Nixon Ranch deer lease.  Primitive camping spots available, motel in Cross Plains
  • No running water (bring bottled water!), generator power during the day.
  • The lease has dirt roads.  In light to moderate rain we can park cars near the gate and shuttle people back to camp in 4wd.  Heavy rains will cancel the event (we've already received this years heavy rain...knock on wood) :)
  • Burn ban will be in effect, will try and get a metal fire pit for campfires.,,wife wants one for the back yard. ;)
  • Gas grill available for cooking and I keep a 12" cast iron dutch oven there as well.  Bring your own food, or there are a couple restaurants in Cross Plains.
  • Limited hog hunting available.  Normally hogs are coming to the 4 running feeders and there are 4 rifle box blinds, 2 of which also have bow setups (wind permitting)
  • There is sleeping for 4 in double bunk beds, please let me know if you intend to use them.  Bring your own bedding/sleeping bag.
  • I'll be happy to provide selfbow assistance and hope to receive knapping instruction  ;D

Please RSVP to this post with suggestions, discussions on food or format, your plans to attend, etc.  This is the first one of these we've done so we're learning as we go.

Thanks, and hope to see you there.
George

I hope you can make it Mike.  Might have my night vision scope back from repair by then.

I watched some of your video's over lunch Patrick.  Should have done that before last weekend, would have made my feeble rock breaking attempts more productive...

Yep, I was afraid of that George - my Brazos floating dates. But it's tentative.

I'll be there... unless work gets in the way.  Looks clear right now.

Am still canoeing. Always find a bunch of flint in there so can't miss that :).

I understand.  I need to get some more too.  I turned a nice turtleback looking flint spall into a tiny turtleback flint rock tonight. ???  There were moments I thought I was getting the hang of thinning...but no, still just making gravel.  I have mastered cutting myself for what that's worth.  Anyway, wish you were coming but hard to compete against a combo canoe/flint trip. ;)

I do have my digital night vision scope sighted in on the hog gun and the little DVR is coming tomorrow.  If the hogs cooperate we could get some video.  Should be fun.
