Hornbeam character bow for Bob....finished pics
« on: July 11, 2011, 08:57:30 pm »
Just finished up this Hornbeam character bow for my good friend Bob. This piece of wood was in the scrap pile to be burnt and I decided to give it a chance. I roughed it out a year ago and after it had dried I propped in a corner and forgot about. It had taken some pretty severe propellar and I didn't think I could save it. Well it turns out a little bit of heat fixed that. It still has matching kinks on each limb a little above mid limb. One twist goes on direction and the other goes the opposite. The tips line up perfect. Its 65" and turned out 49#@27". I was shooting for the high forties because of a easier pull and effective hunting weight for Bob. I highlighted the cambium with alcohol stain and added some antler tips. The grip is whitetail brain tan finished with leather lace. The shelf is also made from the base of a small spike buck.  The string is B-50 with muskrat silencers.  This was my first lefty I have made and I must say I really stink shooting left handed....lol

Bob was very surprised when I showed up at his house with this bow. His eyes filled up when I handed it to him and so did mine. He is a very accomplished archer and a great role model for young hunters. I could say alot about him but to sum it up...He is one heck of a good guy. Seeing him light up made my day!!!

Nice bow Bob. You done good!!!
So that is hornbeam and nott hophornbeam. I have a very character filled hornbeam stave that Kegan gave me a few years ago that I keep looking at but just can't get it started for some reason.

Nice looking bow, StraightArrow.  I made one once from Hornbeam and it too propeller twisted.  Something about gifting a bow brings out the tears in all of us.

Way to go...
