silk backed ipe success! first working bow

after 7 or so failed attempts, i succeeded with this silk backed ipe bow. when i started this bow i said to my self, "this one is the one that works" and that was my mantra. i enjoyed the process and now am very fond of ipe. to say the least, i'm elated. the tiller is a little off, and it came in a little light, and it has a little hand shock like everyone warned, but i don't care ;D i can't wait to do another . specs are as follows; silk backed ipe, purple heart handle and tips,  68" t2t 66.5" n2n 1.4" at the fades, last third tapers to a bit less than 1/2" tips. it draws 35-40# at my 28 inches.  not sure it would take a deer but i think it'd be good bunny medicine. here are the pics.

nice full-draw and brace profile on that bow. It's old fashioned (but so am I) but there was a lot of deer killed in Michigan in the early days (50's and 60's) with 35 and 40 pound bows.....keep your shots close and a scary sharp broadhead. If you can shoot it real accurate is what counts most.

Congrats on that one,nothing like you first shooter, Tiller looks fine to me. You should be proud for sure. :) :)

Nice looking bow Colt. Nice brace and full draw, I think you nailed that one ;D On the next one, and this is JMO, go easy on the scraps when you get to wards final tillering. It seems like IPE come off easier and reduces weight quicker. I'm working on a BBI right now and had to slow dow right after I got to the 2" brace. Have fun on the next one ;)

Congratulations on your shooter!  I've used a lot of Ipe over the last couple of years, my first good shooter was maple backed ipe and still shoots great.  If you continue to use Ipe over time and are making dust, don't take lightly protecting yourself from it.  I've noticed lately that the allergy is starting to build up even just being exposed on my skin!

half eye- this bow probably could kill a deer, but since i'm gonna make a few more of these bendy sticks, i may as well make one that's got a little more oomph to keep it legal
hillbilly61- i think you're absolutely right. when i got it to full brace i had plenty of weight to work with. i did a bit of adjusting and accidentally overshot the changes with just a few good scrapes. lesson learned
parnell- should i use a dusk mask or do i need skin protection too? this ipe stuff sure makes some nasty splinters.

And YES! always use at least a dust mask.
No wood dust is doin any good in your lungs,and some are rightdown poisonous.
