maasai arrows
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:53:13 am »
a pal of mine brought these back to me from a trip to kenya.
thought ya'll might enjoy their craftsmanship.
found their way of wrapping the fletching particularly interesting.

some wicked little barbs on two of the points

it appears to be very thin lengths of rawhide used to wrap the feathers

probably made for the tourist trade but i found em pretty cool nonetheless
ok, one more item-not an arrow
but a wicked cool knife(short sword?) that may become my go to machete
its definitely gonna see some woods time

very neat stuff. The fletching seems very small just enough to slow down the back of the arrow. The arrows are very cool, they look awesome. the guy knew what he was doing he wrapped the front ends with sinew. thanks for sharing.

Take it easy with that kife at first.  If it's made for the tourist trade it could be crappy quality steel.

Ti think those barbs are for driving int the arrow shaft but I could be wrong.  Wicked looking points.  And that wrapping job!

Those barbs are wicked, looks like a tetanus shoot for real! Very interesting, the point would definitely stay in the prey.

what I think is neat is how the points are folded over at the tang so that they can be inserted into the
shaft. clever!

Cool stuff Sadie.
I have a knife I bought years ago from BlackJack knives called a Massai Simba. Has the same shaped double edged blade. Makes a great machete.

My son and his wife spent 6 months in Tanzania on a health assitance trip.  They worked among the Massai.   The "armed" guard at their apartment in Arusha had one of these knive/swords instead of a glock.  He was Massai, friendly and fearless.  My son borought me a knife that is just like the one pictured here.  They are used for everything from cutting loose threads from your shirt to butchering various beasts and for fighting.  The blade is very flexable.  The blade is seasoned with tallow and you can feel the blade sliding in more tallow down in the sheath.
No arrows came home, unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing pictures of the arrows.

Be careful with the barbed arrows. I remember hearing someplace that the barbs are there to hold poison. If so I would be very careful handling them.
