Rasps

hey guys,my birthday is coming up.i am in the market for a couple of new rasps.i want a nicholson 49 and 50.where is the best place to get a good deal on these?also someone said that the new ones are not as good as the old ones.i am not rich,so any input would greatly be appreciated.thanks guys,Steve

I gave mine to Hillbilly, osage clogged it up to easy for me.

Any farm supply store should have them.  I'm sure Tractor Supply carries them.  They will be in the horse isle.  They are around $18 or so I think.  They remove a lot of wood quickly.

...or if you know a farrier they can be free!  I like my Nicholson #49. I use it a lot on all types of wood. Just keep a file card handy! I know 3Rivers sells the Nicholson #49 and #50. I don't think you need both.

I bought an 11" two-sided Shinto and havent touched my #49 or #50 since, probably wont again to be quite honest. The Shinto is amazing at quick removal with a clean finish. Im getting excited thinking about it.

If you can't find a farrier rasp locally, check Amazon. They list several.

thanks everyone for your imput.i am going to tractor suppy tonight.Pearl,i tried the shinto at last years classic.it was the rasp with the hacksaw looking blades.it worked really well.i will probably get one of those too.can't have too many tools.thanks again,Steve

Hey seabass what you heard about them not being as good as the USA built rasps is correct. Mine stink, they load up quick and dulled down even quicker.  I searched high and low and found that all the prices are within a few bucks. I highly suggest a Shinto over a Nicholson. The 11" Shinto was $25!
