Sinew Backed Eastern Red Cedar

Here is another that I just finished. Im not a big fan of sinew backing, but it's fun once and a while.  Its a 70" long Eastern Red cedar, thin limbed style sapling bow. A little long for sinew backing, but its only 1 layer just to toughen it up a bit.  Its 54# @ 28" draw.  Brazilian walnut tip overlays and chocolate deer leather grip.  Kinda a mix between Seminole style, My personal Style and and English longbow style all in one.  Shoots really well, I was surprised how great it turned out. The grain is super pretty as Cedar usually is.  thanks for looking- Ryan

  Sweet lookin' bow.  Just acquired an ERC stave myself so this post was perfect.  What are the dimensions? Did you chase a ring for the back?

thanks I did chase a ring and it was a nightmare, but after a few failed attempts i finally got 1 ring..although I dont think you really neeed 1 ring with cedar, I figured it wouldnt hurt and it was extra insurance. 
      70 long tip to tip
    1 1\2" ish wide and slow steady taper to 1\2" outside thickness or nock and 3\8" inside nock

probably not the ideal dimensions for a cedar bow, but it was an experiment that seems to have a good ending.  Shoots perty hard for 54#.     i tillered it and shot it plenty without the sinew and thats probably why I have the extra string follow.  next time i will induce a lil more reflex before sinew in applied.  I have a few ERC  staves so this gave me a plan to follow.  Id like some shorter ones I just dont know how short I can go at a 28" draw and sinew backed.....  if anyone wants to chime in on that, I would welcome it

Great bow, can't get much prettier wood than that....  very well executed and your own plan :)

Wouldn't the sinew protect the bow enough not to have to chase a ring?

nice looking bow about what diameter was the tree and did you leave some sap wood or go to the heart wood?

Beautiful bow!  I don't think it's necessary to remove the sapwood on ERC, but the heartwood is a lot prettier than the sapwood!     Ron
