View from the lion caves, looking south to Nevada. Lots of country, lots of Juniper trees.  Where the road crosses a vein of obsidian, just obsidian gravel and sand.   Truck on the road vein made of obsidian cobbles. There are hundreds of these places on the Buttes.

These are typical of the cobbles you find lying on the surface, all over the Buttes. I like to just ramble and spall the ones I like and bury the debitage where found.  Down at the knap-in,one of the guys tents. He's got the right frame of mind. This area was a material collection site all the way back to Clovis. Glass Buttes Material has been found in lithics, hundreds of miles from the source.  Dacite outcrop over at the Dacite pits, about 40 miles by road from the Buttes, not so far as the crow flies.

One of the big spalls of Dacite,  You dig and uncover a big boulder, get you a 20 or 30 pound hammer stone and knock off spalls, dig some more, knock off big spalls, repeat until you are wore out.Load spalls,go home.  Mountain Bluebirds were paired off and everywhere.   Big winter herds of Mule deer were all over on the trip.30 to 50 animals per herd.

Frank:  Use to go to the buttes with my friend and mentor, Larry Shoemaker!  We would go to the knappin at Richerson's Rock Ranch and then take a couple of days to go for some glass.  I have an old map somewhere that tells of the locations of various pits.  My favorate was  midnitelace!  A/Ho Joe

Go to Burns Oregon.Drive due west of the sunrise for about an hour, there will be a sign on the left side of the road describing the Glass Buttes, turn around and go back to milemarker 76 , go a little ways past and take the next right ,go in till you start seeing volcanic glass everywhere.      That is how it went my first trip there years ago. The turnoff is between milemarkers 76 and 77 and is a gravel road headed south.  '  Frank
