Tree ID help- Is this Juniper?
« on: May 11, 2012, 04:38:30 am »
Anyone have any idea? I'm hoping it's juniper or a viable bow wood as I walked through a forest of this stuff today.

Dang small pics, but the blue "berries" give it away.   It's juniper of some sort, so find a straight piece and make a bow!    Ron

Oh yeah! Great news! I been looking for wood to harvest myself, but most of the mesquite in the area has been cleared out. There's still a massive amount around (heck I live in Vegas next to a town called Mesquite) but have been reluctant to take the recon drive not knowing where I am going. I was completely SURROUNDED by juniper this weekend and know exactly where to go now! Nice thing is the trees are pretty big and I can probably just harvest large limbs as I need them as opposed to cutting down the trees.  Also there are plenty of dead trees lying on their side as well that I can work with...but I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not.

Watch out for twist in the limbs you choose.  Also- bugs love juniper sapwood, might not have much luck on the dead trees.
