my friend chris...
« on: October 28, 2007, 06:48:14 am »
hi everybody!  -  this is my friend chris glauben and here is one of his bows; the guy is so primitive he doesn't use neither mobile nor internet, actually he doesn't even own a computer... he makes wonderfull bows, though, and a lot of what i know about bow-making and archery i picked up from him.

this is one of his double-curved bamboo-composits with a cross-section as in a japanese yumi.
the bow is 66" ntn, pulls 55#@28" and has a really high early draw-weight.
it's being shot with a fastflight flemish string.

thanks for looking,
frank

WHOA!!!  :o This bow is magnificent!! Your friend has done very well, great tiller and finish on that bow!
Couple of questions I have, is it reflexed when unstrung looking similar to horn bow but less reflex? I believe I see wood in core, do you know what it is? Is core pre-tapered or is it done different way? Again great bow, you should be proud of your friend. :)

alex!  -  picture below shows a sketch of this bow's cross section; wood and bamboo components of the core can be varied and will lead to different qualities in the bow. even the amount of set the bow takes can be varied by choosing different woods.
core components are tapered before glueing, so that the sidestripes don't run out towards the tips.
the finished core is tapered; the bamboo is worked down to zero on the sides so it tapers also.
these bows get glued up using rope and wedges; that's the japanese way of doing that.
after glueing up, they are bend down over a bending jig to teach the limbs how to bend; no further tillering is done.

i just come from shooting the bow at the club for two hours straight; it shows two inches of reflex right after unbracing.

Frank, thanks for sharing Chris' bow with us. He did an incredible job with it. The Yumi construction method and components are interesting also. I own a Vinson Minor "Cane Dragon" with similar components and in a R/D design. Too much science for my brain to comprehend but beautiful designs none the less.  ;) 8)    Pat

So, if I understand this correctly, the belly and the back both use raw boo?

Just about the best tiller and tips I've seen on this site for a laminant. Got your buddy Chris bookmarked for October Backed Bow of the Month.

VB - it's a raw bamboo back and a tempered bamboo belly!

hey thanks everybody for the nice comments! yes, i think that too, it's very good craftman's ship and the bow is a pleasure to shoot!
