10-4 Little Dude
Sand it slick first.
Start with fine sand paper.  220 grit or so.
Finish with a piece of steel wool.
Then remover all of the dust before putting the true oil on.

It will be super slick.

You can sand the sinew patch smooth.  But go easy on it. 
You don't wont to cut it down much at all.
