One would have to ask, why?

You can however get a nice hertzian cone by using a really low-powered BB gun by shooting it down the neck of a thick-bottomed glass bottle. Too much power and it shatters. Too little power and it just cracks or nothing happens. Perfect and you get a cone.

I dunno, knapping with a BB gun...  hmmm... that's gonna be one funny looking billet.  :o  Do you plan on hitting the glass with the butt end or the barrel end?   >:D

That's one of those things that you try, then tell people later about it if it works

I think the results might be better if one was to heat up the glass and drop water on it, or dip an feather in water and touch it to the hot glass.

Who among us here couldn't say that the results of doing that would be amazing?

(PS to any children or feeble minded people reading this post: DO NOT TRY THIS or knapping with a BB gun)

Me.  It would shatter the glass.  Same would go if you did the same with hot stone.  Either way, bad idea.

Hence my PS warning Mike! I can't recall ever giving a public knapping demo when someone didn't ask me about the hot rocks and water thing. I wonder how that story ever got started? It sure spread wide and far. Guess it sounds better than the truth.

UPDATE: I found an article by a fellow named Dan Long that may answer the question of how the story of dropping cold water on hot rocks started. Dan writes, "All I knew for sure was that it wasn't done with fire and water, a theory popularized by Edgar Rice Burroughs “Tarzan”, in which he had the hero shape a stone blade by heating it and strategically applying drops of cold water to the hot rock to remove flakes (incidentally, a great way to put out an eye!)."

Tarzan - LOL! But where did Rice Burroughs come up with his idea?
