Sinew backed yew 48#@25
« on: December 20, 2013, 06:07:16 am »
I haven't posted any bows in ages so here is one I've just re-worked and put the finish on.
It's a piece of English yew, lowish density and a bit plain jane so I put a bit of stain on her to liven things up a bit  ;)
The sinew is deer leg, dyed red and I did a bit of a paint job over it.
It's 48lbs @ 25 and spits arrows nicely. :)

That's a sweet lil' bow! I'm not really into short bows myself, but this one is well executed. How long is it?
It appears to be all heartwood, right? Is that for a particular reason? I'm wondering how sapwood would perform under sinew. I can imagine the heartwood is better in compression, but then again, the sapwood might be a good core wood choice as 'lamination'. Did you flip the tips with dry heat or steam?
That's a great bow you got there. Sweet tiller.

Nice bow Mike. I have some short sinew bows in the works myself. I really like 'em.

Very cool little short bow.  I'm curious on the length also.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Nice one Mike.  I have a few short pieces of yew I am going to try a similar design on.

tight little yew, really like it! Like DarkSoul had asked, why no sap  wood? didnt need any with the sinew taking up tension? awesome bow

Glad you fella's like it  :) and thanks Darksoul for the photo help...I've got it now
It's really fun to shoot.
Yes it's all heartwood. I removed all the sapwood because that's what the Indians did with their yew/sinew bows from what I could gather and it seemed to make sense to me. This was also a fairly characterful limb so when I decided to make this bow I wanted a straight stave with no humps and bumps. By the time it was made smooth on the back the sapwood was gone in some places anyway. Maybe having a thin layer of lower sg sapwood may lower overall limb weight? but it's also possibily a weakness?
I think it's  50 1/2 inches ntn.
The tips were bent with dry heat and a bit of veggy oil to stop scorching.

Lovely bend and great finish.

Should have called it a SinYew.
