backing bow with deerhide? update!!

JW_Halverson:
I have used hide glue and Titebond II and III with rawhide.  They all work great!  No problem with the polyvinylacetate glues and rawhide.  I think what you were referencing from TBB was their recommendation that you use hideglue with sinew.

In my experience, I prefer the tackiness of the TBII/III with the rawhide.  I find the hide glue too slippery, makes a tougher job of things.

The trick with the hide glue is using heat and working a bit at a time. Size the bow  and hide  first.  I iron it on and smooth it with a polished brass bar. This will squeegee out the excess and give a good bond. If the iron sizzles when water is dripped on it , it is too hot. Be mindfull not squeeze out all of the glue and starve the joint.

Its a beauty !

What is the finish on it?

Is that a doe hide?  It doesnt appear to have bulked it up at all.
