osage recurve with skins
« on: September 13, 2014, 01:13:27 pm »
I wasn't gonna post this, but what the heck.

Okay... I admit it. I make a lot of laminated bows. I like lam bows. But, every once in a while, I like to pull a selfbow outta the hat. This is an osage selfbow recurve from a stave I got from PEARL DRUMS (thanks Chris!). It's not snakey, but certainly lumpy and bumpy (the pics really don't show it). I called it 'Whispering Death', because Greg (the new owner) wants to take a deer with it this season.

Greg wanted 40-45# at his draw length, and it came out to 42#@25". It's 62" NTN, with Western rattler skins. Buffalo horn nocks, black leather grip, with 12 strand FF string. Final weight: 600 grams. It is a bit heavy, but it's osage. Induced curves with steam initially, and then set the curves with dry heat. I had to do two heat sessions to get the string alignment perfect. One limb had a bit of twist, and the other was off a bit.

The early string weight is terrific... the highest I've had with this weight. Needless to say, it shoots very fast. No set... like none, but I didn't expect any with those stats.

You did good, Adam. That bow ought to thump a deer easy.

Thanks, Eddie

Here's the money shot. Unfortunately, it's not a good one. I hadn't done the string serving, and there was no nock point on the string. I had the arrow nocked too far up, but you get the idea on the tiller. I forgot to get a good full draw shot before Greg picked it up. He was pretty anxious to get it, and I just didn't remember.

Sweet, Adam. Nice curves! ;)

Nice bow Adam. Love the neatness of your work. Everything is buttoned up and nicely done.
