Flint Michigan Stone Point

Knowing my interest in primitive archery, my boss brought this in for me to see.  It is a point his mother found near the Flint River in Michigan.  Admittedly, I know little about stone points.  It appears to be from chert, from what little I know.  It was found eighty-two years ago.  Surprisingly, it is still relatively sharp.  The "blemish" appears to be a quartz deposit in the stone.  Almost looks metallic.  Without a magnifying glass, it's tough to tell.  Hope ya'll enjoy...

That point is approximately 2,000 years old.  It predates the use of the bow.  It was probably originally mounted on a spear or an atlatl dart.  According to what I found on the internet, it was made in Illinois by the Hopewell culture and was traded up into Ontario.  Tell your boss to carefully frame it and take care of it.  Money wise it isn't worth more than $50 but to my mind it's priceless.

I found a point in my yard while putting in a new rose bed.  After doing some checking, the point is probably 8,000 years old.  It's just an amazing thing to know that people were living where my home is, that far back in history.

     I found one identical to it, on my Uncle's dairy farm in Spooner, Wisconsin, when I was about 11 or 12 years old.  But it was a little more on the redish color.  It was in great condition too, till it got chipped in a box of stuff.  It was about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch wide, and about an inch or more long.  Nice point.

Yea looks like Hopewell/Snyders point..please don't put that on an arrow to shoot! mounting on an arrow for display or in a case is where it needs to be..
