Getting the curves in tonight. It's probably too much bend but we'll see. Next it to deflex the handle and then sinew!

DH - I would glue directly to the wood...but I have never tried going over top of RH.

Shot the hackberry the last couple of nights to get a feel for it.  It seems to be shooting fine - not taking any set and it zips an arrow pretty quick.  I still have a little extra weight so may tweak tillering as I shoot it in.

Here are the last 3 arrows shot this evening.

Looks good Mitch!  Deer are in trouble when your behind the bow!!

Dylan....flat surfaces glue the best so just flatten the area down you want to glue the overlay to and stick her tight.  I like to use the overlay material as a sanding block so both surfaces mate as perfectly as possible.

That is brilliant! Light bulb!!  ;D

Tim R, that's a lot of bend, but it looks darn good!

I just glued some walnut tip overlays on the ironwood bow I posted a while back. I originally had pin knocks, just changed my mind. I'm also thinking about putting some skins on it. I have a copper head skin that would look sweet on that stick.

Keep up the good work everybody. This trade seems to be going very well.

I'm waiting on my black walnut to dry wished I'd have deflexed the handle area. It's too late now but the entire bow pulled so much reflex that I think it will be hard to string and handle with the tips that far behind the handle.

I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

Nice looking bow Hammer.

Fred, if you can harness that energy in that bow it will be a fast shooter.  Good luck.

Hammer .... artwork is nice!
... alone in distant woods or fields, in unpretending sproutlands or pastures tracked by rabbits, even in a bleak and, to most, cheerless day .... .  I suppose that this value, in my case, is equivalent to what others get by churchgoing & prayer.  Hank Thoreau, 1857

Those curves look good to me TR.  A little deflex out of the handle is a good idea.

Looking good HT.

Gutshot - sometimes the arrows fly good and sometimes they don't!

Fred - that sure did take a lot of reflex.  Good luck taming it.
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

Fred,
If it's reflex is too much and your out of options you might be able to cut it and v-splice deflex that way, if there's no other options left.

Everyone seems to be on top of things, with no major dilemmas. That's certainly nice to return to.

I had a 3D fun shoot today. I don't have much progress to report having spent my recent free time making the arrows the wife and I shot today and re- wrapping a handle on one of the go to shooters. It was her first organized shoot. She wasn't as consistent as she is in the yard, but ended up the talk of the entire event by drilling a perfect bulls eye on the course's notoriously hard shot. It is a 40 yard downhill(20' drop down in the first 15' forward) on a tiny coyote with a kill zone about soft ball sized. This shot was made with one of my first successful bows, a 35# @ 28" ash board bow, with a lightweight ERC arrow I made from a 2 x 4. Up until that point, I was afraid she might not have been having fun. I guess it just takes one good shot to make you forget all the bad ones that came first. That sounds darn near sage-like wisdom right there
Met some new faces that were smart and stayed home during last years -20 temperatures. As if meeting like minded locals wasn't good enough, I made a connection for osage and yew locally. One of the shooter turned out to be a hero/influence of mine, a local wildlife artist named Jack Paluh. I even got invited to his studio to paint with him sometime. My parents have numerous prints of his hanging on their walls. My father was a little bummed that he declined my invite, but may attend next year.  ;D
Today was a pretty sweet day indeed.
