That's a birch bark backing with some walnut stain over it.

Ok... Figured I should probably ask fo help before I do anything and screw it up.
What is happening here? This icture is looking straight down on the back of the bow. The more it bends, the worse it gets.
What do I need to do??

Thanks

Here is an update on the delivery day for my bow.  I just checked the tracking and it is now expected to be delivery on July 5th.  :'(

If you can't tell from the pic, the end of the limb is twisting and bending. The twist is going counter clockwise, and the bend is going right (you can't see the twist in this picture, but you can see it bending)

David, is the thickness even across the limb.  It sounds like maybe you either scraped or rasped more off of one side than the other.  That will cause twisting like that as one side of the limb is stronger than the other.  This is one possibility.

Anyone live close to David that could give him some hands on help? It's hard to tell and explain from pictures exactly where the twist starts on the limb. If limb thickness is even on both sides you may be able to heat it out on the caul but if one side is thicker you need to reduce wood from the thick side. Might not take much wood removal to even it out. Don't overdo it and don't pull it over your intended draw length and weight.
I found many years ago that it is much easier and more rewarding working with those that don't know anything than those that know it all.

Wow...this thread has a ton of sweet looking bows being exchanged here too.
David...Does your limb have a high crown?Or from a sapling? Does the crown of your limb run right down the center of limb lengthwise? Or in other words does it feather out on the belly down the middle? Can't tell but it is braced there in your pic right?

Fred, it starts around the last 1/3rd of the limb.

I'm not sure about the crown, I'll also check that when I go back out. I don't know what size of tree the stave came from, it was sent to me by Half Eye.
Not braced, it is pulled to around 9". I haven't shortened the string enough for it to be at full brace.

Looking again I can see nothing wrong with crown and looks good down the center from lines or cambium showing there.Having both limbs even width and even thickness won't hurt to brace the bow anyway if it is'nt a 90 pounder or something yet.Pitting one limb against the other to see what happens and to check string alignment also.

Oklahoma City.
Im hoping I didn't totally screw this up a few minutes ago, took off a little too much dead center and now it's bending pretty wierd. Hoping I can fix tht, even up the limbs and pray that the twist doesn't hurt anything...

Yeah... I think I just screwed up.
Can it be saved?
I have red oak board bow half cutout, sort of as a back up.... I really hope I don't have to use it... :(
