I'm back home from the classic. It was sure a great time! I got the dogwood Plan B tillered and shot the course with it. It took some set, some from my tillering skills, and maybe some from moisture.
It rained several days and was pretty humid at the classic. After I finished tillering and measuring the draw weight, I then went to it with sandpaper, rounding the corners some more and getting it all smoothed out. Then it went in the hotbox overnight. When I pulled it out and remeasured to see how much weight I lost with the sanding, the bow had actually gained several pounds. If I make a guess that the sanding dropped 2-3 pounds, and the next day was 3 pounds heavier, then I actually gained 5 or 6 pounds due to drying.
The stave was cut and split over a year ago, and stored in air conditioned garage. It has been roughed out for several months now and stored in air condition. My guess is that it absorbed humidity. I am going to keep working on it and clean things up a little more, and was considering adding some reflex and/or heat treat. I am right at target weight right now, so I would have to shave a little weight off first.
I also worked on a previous dogwood that I had whip-tillered, piking it and cutting new nocks and started re-tillering. I think this one would make a good Plan C. And I worked on a white oak bow that I made at the classic last year. The tips were too narrow and unstable, gradually moving sideways after being strung for a while. I piked this one and re-tillered. With a heat treat, this might be a good Plan D.
Anyway, a great time and I wish everyone could have been there. I will post some pics soon.
