Finally things have calmed down a little bit and I told my wife this week is bow week! Been chopping away at it after work for a few days and it's now starting to bend to the floor. I think tonight I can start tiller with the long string.

Janderson what type of wood are you using? How thick are your limbs?  I like the character in that left limb.

It's Black walnut, easy and soft to work with, about 3/4" thick. When would it be time to put raw hide backing on?

that might be interesting.  But I bet it will just turn purpleheart brown.

I was told that to keep it purple to put a 50-50 mix of mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil, one coat leave till the next day and repeat, then straight linseed oil, my wife's bow was still purple last i checked and it has been a year or two
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

Janderson never worked black walnut. I would put the rawhide on before tillering if it was mine but only if it needed it. I wouldn't waste rawhide if I didn't have to have it. Maybe somebody that has worked BW will chin in and give you some advice

A little sneak peek at my plan B. Hickory backed yew from the wizard. It's got one coat of true oil so fare. It's 63" t2t and right now pulls 43#. Tips are east India rosewood arrow rest is carpathian elm burl scrap. I'll get the real pics up when she done thanks Tim

It wasn't too bad. Once I got it down to thickness it went quick. I almost took to much off.

Looks like a lot of great bows are being built. Been to busy with other things to get any bow work done lately and looks like it might be a couple more weeks before I get any time for bows. I'm starting to chomp at the bit already.

Howdy all, I've been MIA for a bit due to viruses in the network.  I haven't run off to the woods for good,...yet. I have my plan a and b shooting and have started finishing. I have time so I started a couple more and I'll pick the best of the bunch when time draws slim. It's late and I've been staring at computer code for days and days, so I'll get some pics up soon.

Oh and I almost forgot there's good news too. I received my trade bow for good old half eye. It's an absolute beast. It has to be drawing at 75 lbs at least. I had to make new arrows for it. Two sets actually, the first was too weak in spine at 65#. It likes 75-80 #.  I sinks arrows deep into the target. If it were any heavier it might be too much for me to shoot, but as it is is just what I wanted for a max draw weight bow. Plus it is a replica of a Mohawk bow, so it feels at home here in NW PA and matches my new haircut.
I have nothing but scorn for all weird ideas other than my own.
