Osage weight loss ?
« on: May 14, 2016, 05:05:35 pm »
Hi Fellas I'm just finishing up my first Osage bow & left it about 5 lbs heavy I'm just wondering what is typical weight loss after shoot in & sanding for Osage I'm letting it acclimate to the string for a couple hours at a time haven't shot it yet  ?

2-4 pounds perhaps, but it depends on your tillering abilities and techniques, and whether you pushed the limits of your chosen design features beyond the wood's abilities or not. It's all relevant, and not all osage is created equal... so... who knows? :^) I've had bows not lose weight during shooting in, and then gain weight with regular use as they aged.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

I'd say sand it and shoot 100 arrows through it then check the weight.

I've seen it gain weight with age like Squirrely said, as it continues to dry out. I've never really lost more then a couple of pounds sanding and shooting in unless I over stressed the wood during tillering.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?
