A bow for my brother's birthday
« on: June 13, 2016, 12:32:25 am »
This was my plan A for the 2016 trade. This osage selfbow is 64" knock-to-knock, and is just over 1.25"  for most of its length, and tapering to 7/16" at the knocks. It came in at nearly 50#  @29",  which was a little light for my trade victim,  but just about right for my brother, who is relatively new to archery and who has been hinting for a while that he would like one.  The stave came from the Christmas exchange and it is my first bow with a hole in it.  The finish is 7-8 coats of tung oil rubbed down with fine pumice powder.  I really like the satin finish that results.  It shoots super smooth and is light in the hand.

the tips are made of purpleheart and I chose a red-died leather to match.

Each bow seems to demand a certain shape to the fades.  I have always liked what Simon in Bavaria does with his, and this bow seemed to want that too.

the stitching is artificial sinew

and the full back

and braced--the top is on the left in this picture.  I put in a slight positive tiller so the bottom limb is just a little stiffer than the top:

and finally the full draw pic.  I am learning to get my elbow down :D

Thanks to my wife for the patient picture taking.
and Thanks for looking.  I would love any and all comments--constructive or otherwise.  I am still trying to get better.

That's a beauty! Nicely done :)
The only critism i'd make would be to keep your bow arm bent a little ;)

Those fade out's are beautiful!

I'll have to try that on my next bow.

Simple is beautiful. Would be even more w/o that unnecessary arrow self. Got my BoM vote anyway.

Another fine bow, Jeff. Everything about it screams hunting bow.
