selfbow help

I have a nice Osage bow cut out and ready to floor tiller. It is 62" ntn. Very clean piece of wood. I cut through the growth ring 3" from the end. If I leave the last 5" stiff will it be OK or should I wrap it with something. I don't want to back the whole bow.

Take it down to the Next good Growth Ring...that would be my answer.....you could always wrap it with Sinew....but Why??? Just take an Hour and follow another Ring....and have the best Back possible for Hedge...take your time and use a good Scraper...you will be happier if you do it right....and look at the experience you will be getting

It will be to light of a Bow if I do that. I should have chased the ring before I cut it down but it to late know.

If it's messed up....just give it to DanaM.  (I think he's the one who knows how to "take care" of such things) ??? ;)

Or just wrap it (like ya said) or patch it.   ;D

(I think the new bowyer's bible says something about using a flax fiber "spot-problem patch"..... p.135)

Not sure what yer refering to but anyone wants to send me hedge I will be glad to take it offin their hands ;D

swink what draw length and weight ya looking to get?? 3" from the nock if its a minor violation I can't see it hurtin anything with a stiff tipped tiller.
Try it and see if it breaks I didn't tell ya to do it ;D

How thick are the growth rings? and what is the thickness of the limbs? If the rings are aren't too thick you could chase another ring.

Swink-No really. I'm serious. Cutting through a growth ring is not an option. Why create a weak spot? Spend some extra time and do it right. Chase to the next ring. IMHO.  :( Jawge

George, he said he has it roughed out already, and I think he just wants to know if he can keep it.

Swink, I think you could just back that area and it would be fine. Then you could do a stain job on the tips, like Gordon has done, to hide it.  ;D

I will trace a new ring and if the Bow turns out to light for my draw i will shorten it.

Thanks for all the help. If it holds up will try to post picks. I have made some Hickory bows but this is my first Osage.
