meet Ol' Hick
« on: August 10, 2017, 11:09:53 am »
after about a 13 yr hiatus I wanted to get back into selfbows. after a couple staves ended up a little light I finally got this piece of hickory to be worthy of the woods. 66" 45@28. stained with gel antique leather stain and finished with tru oil. I need to get some pumice to take the sheen off. I also need a little work on my leather handle wrap.  all critiques welcome. I hope to have some flint heads and rawhide string ready to go for october.

Good looking bow!,  what are the specs on limb width, thickness, etc.  I'm about to start my first attempt at a hickory bow, and will take any advice I can get!

Very nice.  Looks like you picked up where you left off.

Keep us updated on the rawhide string.

Hawkdancer: typical hickory design....width is 1.75" at fades till mid limb and straight taper to around 1/2" knocks.  Tried to heat in some reflex but hickory just doesn't react well with heat for me. I did toast the belly on this one. Can't say whether or not it helped or not.

Done a few hickory...and taken hic to the limit... I like the tiller very much long easy bends.  Making it bend right out of the fades can produce frets if it is not just prefect.  again really like the tiller, bet it's a smooth shooter.
