Heat won't make glass products chip any better. If it is low grade dacite, I think it may have ash crumbs in it. Those can cause trouble.

This last photo you posted shows a coral nodule mixed in with the spalls - it's located on the upper right side of the photo. I can see the polyps. Rick B
