Hickory,Osage, Walnut, Cherry short bow
« on: May 10, 2018, 02:53:56 pm »
This bow began with a Hickory stave which I spokeshaved down to a single growth ring and took the back off with a bandsaw. I planed that down to about 1/8" and laminated it to a Bl. Cherry belly  in about 4" of reflex, with Bl. Walnut inserts to raise the tips. I think the combination of nearly 50lb. draw-weight, short length, reflex and raised static tips was too much stress for the Cherry and caused the belly to chrysal, so I removed the Cherry down to about 1/16" and replaced it with Osage. This solved the problem however the string was not tracking properly over the grip so I took the shoulder nocks off, brought the tips to a point and added horn overlays which aligned the string. Width is 1 5/8" at the inner fades and 1 1/2" at the outer fades, running for an all-working limb length of 17", then angles sharply in a concave profile to the nocks over a 5 1/2" span. I used a Bl. Walnut riser to match the tip inserts. #48@24"  L-53"ntn.

That is a great looking bow.  The full draw looks great and the contrast of the different woods looks great.

Nice work.

Great looking weapon you've got there. Unique combo, and the bend looks really nice  :)

I was surprised at first to read the cherry was on the belly of a bow like that! I thought you found some cherry on steroids or something. Awesome bow. Must have been fun to make.
