Here in FL it can be found often on the banks or in rivers where it has a tendency to lie in clumps. I’ve seen where it is still lying in heads or ledges, essentially where it formed all that time ago. That said, people also dig for it...but that requires the land access and knowledge.
FL coral looks like any other piece of limestone as it’s calcified when you pick it up. You have to hit it to see if it spalls. Be hard to tell by weight...
