Maple-backed Yew D/R

Howdy everyone,

Some of you may have seen this bow when I posted a tiller check on it a week or two ago. Well here she is all prettied up. I'm kinda spiked about her cause I've been messin with these hard-backed D/R bows for a while now, tryin like heck to end up with one that holds some reflex and shoots real fast. This one feels like all the failures might have been worth it. She holds about 1" of reflex, draws very smooth, and shoots in the high 170s.

Here are some details...

62" ntn
43# @ 27"
made from yew billets and a maple backing strip I ripped off the outside of a 10" diameter tree
maple and osage handle build-up
1 1/4" wide at the fades tapering to an inch (6" from the tips), then down to 3/8" for that last 6"
artificial sinew wrapped around the handle
cork arrow rest w/ small leather strike plate
buffalo horn tips
the design on the back is from a stencil and black sharpie

Very nice Jeff. Looks like you maybe got it figured out. I like that Breast Cancer Awareness Shirt. First saw it when one of the scales gals at the grain elevator was wearing one.

Jeff,
   ya outdid your bad self on that bow...170 fps from a 43# bow will kill anything ya got in your neck of the woods. Very well done....even if it does have a "handle", ::)

Sweet outcome to your persistence.Who was it Jim Hamm saying that maybe sometimes we need to be more persistent than smart....Ha Ha.I know that saying has rung true with me.Like the art work too.Very nice bow there!!!

BJ, not sure how much I got figured, but what I know I learned from the good folks here on PA. Like...
-with the right design, reflex can be preserved (Marc St. Louis)
-the backing strip can't be too thick or thin and has to be high quality (Marc St. Louis, Bayou Ben, Pat B)
-put the reflex in the outer limbs and make it gradual (Pearly, Bayou Ben, Badger)
-a good splice/handle build up is key (Eric K., DC)
-don't let the inners work too much (Simson, Aaron, Mark S., bushboy)

I could go on and on. These are just few that come to mind right away

For a long time I've been obsessing over these wood-backed bows, but after seeing your recent thread and chatting with you a bit I feel a strong pull back to the primitive. Thank you for the compliment, but thank you even more for the inspiration.  ;)

That bow looks fine, I like the pattern on the back.
I think there is some more potential in this bow (if you like), I see asome inches more draw length
