Can you clear something up for me? The hamon shows the difference in hardness, right? Will it tend to lose it's edge quicker where the hamon reaches the edge in those few spots?

correct.
i thought the same thing when i started but havent noticed a significant difference in hardness  till you get a ways above the line.
its still reasonably hard till you get about 1/3 the way up the blade.

you can feel  it when its sanded,

the clay stopped 1/8 to 3/16 above where the actual line is.
