Ash Sudbury/Pyramid/Holmegaard Mix
« on: November 27, 2019, 04:06:13 am »
One of my first bows was some kind similar to this design but with 21# at 25“, 60“ntn and maple. My wife shots it and I am always impressed by their performance! For sure a lucky hit.

So I wanted something similar in my size.
The Design is somehow a mixture of Holmegaard, Pyramid, and Sudbury. Sudbury handle and fades, Pyramid for the working limb, and Holmegaard for the outer.

Specs:
45#@26“
66“ntn
Max w.: almost 2“
Tips : 5/16“ - overlay - some unknown wood , could be some very dense palm wood
Handle: almost 6“ long
Fades: 3  1/2“ long
Eiffel Tower takes about 1/3 of the limb.
Cross section: starts heavy trapped at the fades, to rectangular after the shoulder, to square - 4“ before nocks. Nocks have an oval cross section.
Mass is 485g ( I calculated 622g with Steve Gardener´s mass calculator!)

The stave was 1“ deflexed  and I flipped the outers to about 1“ reflex when I heat treated the belly and outers. Also I flattened out the hump in the dogleg with steam.
The Bow took about 1,5“ permanent set and 0,5“ dynamic set after unstringing.
This is my most reliable bow and if I would go hunting for real this would be my bow to go.
To honor its performance I stained with OO soup. This bright yellow will definitely cause some chats and I love to say : No it is not OO it is ASH! ( I had this already with an ash bow which looked like aged OO lol)
What do you think about design and tiller?
Thanks for your thoughts!

Looks nice. It sure does look like Osage. Very interesting. I would like to see it in a couple years to see if it darkens.

Nice job!  Interesting blend of styles!  I'm interested in the "soup recipe", gpp!

Simk and bjrogg I was wondering the same. Pretty sure someone knows, if not I will post when I recognize a significant color change.
What I also recognized, staining with the soup works like a dream, the early growth rings like to leave some white spots, but OO soup penetrates very well. Also when I applied the first layer with tung oil, it acted like being oiled already. Normally it just sucks up the first layer.

Just take scrapes, shavings, sawdust and boil it a couple of hours until you get a thick soup. Take some samples if you are not sure how thick. I also hanged in a teabag with black tea for a couple of minutesFilter the soup and apply it mixed with alcohol (IPA)

Glad you like it, thanks.

Nice :0 That design obviously works well with the Ash.
Did you stain it that colour to make it think it was Osage  ;D
