Bush bow for my son.
« on: February 16, 2020, 05:10:17 pm »
I can’t ID this bush but I cut down a longish piece a couple months back and stripped the bark off and set it on the mantle to dry.  It made a nice kids bow.  The whole bow was deflexed evenly through so I steamed some setback in the center and then applied some dry heat.  The unbraced profile is just a very slight gullwing shape.   Not sure what it draws but it’s about max for my son or comfortably draw for now.  It slung a 500 grain arrow 85 yards with me shooting it.

The weather was so nice today I took the sycamore bow out and my son and I enjoyed some stump shooting at my dads property.  We also went to the park and my son enjoyed  some flight shooting.  Just slinging arrows and watching them fly.  He was loving every minute of it.

I've got a 3 inch piece of this stuff I've been pondering on. Perhaps I'll make it now!

Thanks guys.  It was a day I’ll never forget.  My son and I’d first flight shoot and stump shooting adventure.

Yellowstave now that you mention it yes I believe it is honeysuckle. I went and found a decent 1” and 1.5” diameter piece today hidden in a dead pine tree.  I cut a couple pieces down I’m gonna try for a heavier weight short bow soon.

Yep honeysuckle, your 1 1-2” piece will make 50-60lb if you’re carful while tillering

Looks like Mock Orange Philadelphus Virginalis to me. Makes a good bow if you can find a big enough piece, and arrows but a little heavy.

Very fun post.  It kinda looks like a bushman bow.  How did you wrap the string nocks?

Very neat!  Good tale and adventure getting time outdoors with your son!  I hope the archery bug bites him hard! :BB (SH) :NN

Thanks guys.

Parnell.  The nocks are just suede that I folded over and wrapped in cotton string soaked in wood glue. The tips come to points so cutting nocks was not an option.
