I've been doing some research and ya know, nowhere in the song does it say that Billy Joe died when he jumped off the Tallahachie Bridge. It was only 20' high.

What? Me bored? ;D ;D

according to hollywood

Quote
When screenwriter Herman Raucher met with Bobbie Gentry to find out why Billie Joe committed suicide, she admitted she didn’t know at all. So the movie recast Billy Joe as a gay teenager in 1960 Mississippi.

The bridge. Apparently the bridge is 20' high and the water is very deep.
