my hound

This is Tayo, my irrigation assistant.  He's a 9 week old black lab.  Going to be a heckuva hunting dog some day.  Right now he's a good buddy with very busy teeth who is quickly learning how things work around here.

I love labs. We've had 2 blacks, 2 chocolate and a yellow over the last 40 years.

Don't let my wife see that puppy. She loves labs more than me and especially lab puppies. Cute!

Yeah, he gets that look a LOT.  ha ha ha  But he's a smart little guy, learning to obey, just enough of an attitude to be interesting.

That's about the age I started letting my Chocolate go everywhere with me. She was the smartest and best hunting dog I've ever had. I think its real important to let them start bonding with you at an early age. A word of caution I was given from the trainer that gave me mine. He told me to keep commands simple and consistant. The command stay tells the dog more and simpler than sit. And the Lab can learn more then a 100 words in the English vocabulary and they will try to outguess you the more they understand.

Keep him busy!  They are smart dogs and like Mullet said, they will try to outsmart you!  Time to start on the basic commands, and retrieving, but no tug of war or chewing!  Nice looking pup!

Hawk, the hardest thing I had to teach my lab was not to retrieve. Everyone wanted to make him do it and he was always eager to comply. Retrieving is so natural for a lab.
Honoring and retrieving only on command is something that has to be trained if you want to use the lab while hunting.

They can drive you nuts if they get fetch crazy. Friends had a wonderful Lab that just wouldn't leave you alone. Constantly dropping his ball on your foot :D :D

...Then there's when they start retrieving the sapling trees and shrubs you just planted.  We're working on it.  Tayo is a pretty hard-headed little cuss, which can translate into some good tenacity once they understand who's in charge.
